قامت دولة بني مهدي في بلاد اليمن في منتصف القرن السادس الهجري تقريبًا، بفضل حركة دينية قام بها أبو الحسن على بن مهدي، وقد وقع الاختلاف بين الباحثين المحدثين حول مذهب بني مهدي، وحاول كل منهم إثبات رأيه من خلال أقوال المؤرخين القدماء، وأيضا من خلال الشواهد النقدية التي وصلتنا من دولة بني مهدي، وجميع نقود أسرة بني مهدي المعروفة قد عثر عليها في كنز نقود تم اكتشافه في منتصف عام 1980 في بيت الفقيه، ويتضمن هذا الكنز 125 قطعة مضروبة في دار سك واحدة وهي زبيد، وينتمي زمنيًا إلى عصر كلٍ من دولة بني مهدي والدولة الأيوبية، وجميع نقود بني مهدي من إصدار دار سك زبيد فقط، وهذا الكنز يغطي الفترة الواقعة بين الأعوام 560 إلى 567 هجري، واستمرت الكتابات ذاتها المنقوشة على النقود سبع عشرة سنة دون تغيير، وتمثل جميعها طرازًا واحدًا. وفي هذا البحث، سوف نقوم بدارسة مسكوكات بني مهدي دراسة تحليلية في ضوء المصادر التاريخية؛ للكشف عن حقيقة مذهب بني مهدي، والذي اختلف في تحديده الباحثون السابقون اعتمادًا على هذا الوثائق التاريخية.
 
Abstract:
The Mahdid “Banī Mahdī” State was established in Yemen in about the middle of the sixth Hijri century thanks to a religious movement by Abū ‘l-Ḥasan ‘Alī ibn Mahdi. Modern researchers differed on the doctrine of the Banī Mahdī, with each trying to prove his opinion based on the statements of ancient historians and the coins we have from the state of the Banī Mahdī. All the recognized coins of the Banī Mahdī Dynasty were found in a treasure discovered in mid-1980 in Bayt al-Faqīh “i.e., the house of the jurist” that included 125 coins minted in one mint, namely Zabīd and chronologically affiliated with the era of both the Banī Mahdī State and the Ayyubid State. All the coins of Banī Mahdī were minted by the Zabīd Mint only. That treasure covered the period from 560 to 567 AH. The same inscriptions of the coins continued for seventeen years, representing one prototype. In this research paper, the coins of Banī Mahdī were studied analytically in light of historical sources to reveal the truth about the doctrine of Banī Mahdī, which former researchers differed in defining based on these historical documents.
