الملخص:
على الرغم ما حققه النظام النقدي القائم على النقود الأجنبية في زنجبار للسلاطين والتجار من ثراء، فقد اتجه السلطان برغش بن سعيد لسك النقود المحلية كمحاولة للتخلص من النفوذ الإنجليزي الذي فرض عليه، وحماية لما تبقى له من استقلال، وقد تحقق هذا الغرض من حيث التداول النقدي؛ حيث أثرت هذه النقود على تداول النقود الأجنبية، واكتسبت رواجًا عاليًا بين أهل زنجبار، وسواحل المحيط الهندي. وبرغم ذلك، لم تستطع التخلص من السمات الفنية للنقود الأجنبية، فجاءت على نفس أوزانها وطرزها، وصارت ذات طابع استعماري مميز، إلا أن هذا الطابع لم يفقدها أهميتها النقدية، وحب الناس للتداول بها.
Abstract:
Despite the wealth that was achieved for the sultans and merchants by the monetary system based on foreign coins in Zanzibar, Sultan Barghash bin Said turned to mint local coins. This was as an attempt to get rid of the English influence that was imposed on him and to protect what remained of his independence. This attempt achieved its purpose in terms of monetary circulation, as it affected the circulation of foreign coins, and gained high popularity among the people of Zanzibar and the coasts of the Indian Ocean. Alternatively, it was not able to get rid of the technical features of the foreign coins. Therefore, it was close to its weights and prototype, and became of a distinctive colonial character. However, these characteristics did not affect its monetary importance and people preference in trading.
